💡 6 ways to travel more for less

Retirement in a motorhome can cost far less than you'd think. Here are our best tips.

🛒Buy smart, new or used
A well-maintained used motorhome costs 30 to 50% less than a new one and loses value more slowly. The ideal choice for retirement: a compact model that's easy to drive and park, with good insulation for travelling out of season.
🅿️Mix free stopovers with serviced ones
Many municipal stopovers are free or just a few euros. Serviced sites (like ours) provide water, electricity and waste disposal for a small fee. By mixing the two, you can bring your “overnight stays” costs down very easily.
📅Travel out of season
The great freedom of motorhome life in retirement: setting off while everyone else is at work! May, June, September and October offer mild weather, uncrowded sites and lower prices everywhere.
🎟️Join a host-stop network
Host-stop networks (winegrowers, farms, craftspeople) offer a free night in exchange for a visit or a small purchase. A modest annual fee that pays for itself in just a few nights.
Drive gently, spend less
At 90 km/h rather than 110, a motorhome uses up to 20% less fuel. And in any case, in retirement there's no rush — you're free to savour the scenery.
🔧Stay ahead on maintenance
A regular maintenance budget (servicing, tyres, roof sealing) keeps the big bills at bay. A well-looked-after vehicle holds its value and will carry you far, for years, with complete peace of mind.
Frequently asked questions

❓ Everything you need to know about motorhome budgets

What budget should you plan for travelling by motorhome in retirement?
It all depends on your pace. Counting fuel, overnight stays, everyday living and fixed costs (insurance, maintenance), a couple of newly retired travellers spending 3 months a year on the road often spend the equivalent of €4,000 to €8,000 a year. Our simulator gives you a personalised estimate in just a few seconds.
How much does a night in a motorhome cost?
Between €0 (where parking is permitted, and at some municipal stopovers) and €15 at a serviced site with water, electricity and waste disposal. Far less than a hotel — that's exactly what makes a motorhome so appealing for a travelling retirement.
How many kilometres a year in a motorhome?
Most motorhomers cover between 5,000 and 12,000 km a year. In retirement you often drive very little each day: you settle in for a few days at a stopover, explore the area on foot or by bike, then move on.
Does a motorhome work out cheaper than a hotel?
Over time, yes — as soon as you travel regularly. The initial investment (the vehicle) pays for itself through very cheap overnight stays and the freedom to cook your own meals. Our simulator works out your estimated savings compared with a hotel holiday.
What's the fuel consumption of a motorhome?
Reckon on 9 to 13 litres of diesel per 100 km depending on the size of your vehicle and how you drive. Driving gently (around 90 km/h) noticeably lowers your fuel bill.
Where to park your motorhome by the sea?
At a dedicated stopover like Night4CampingCar in Sainte-Marie-la-Mer: 900 m from the beach, open 24/7, with water, electricity and waste disposal. The perfect starting point for a retirement right by the sea.
