Why come

The Pyrénées-Orientales, a motorhome paradise

A département where you can go from beach to mountains in an hour, bathed in Catalan light and sitting right on the doorstep of Spain. Four compelling reasons to bring your motorhome here.

🏔️

Sea and mountains within an hour

Morning toes in the Mediterranean, afternoon gazing at snow-capped Canigou: the Pyrénées-Orientales is one of the few places in France where beach and high mountain are almost side by side.

☀️

300 days of sunshine a year

The sunniest département in mainland France. The motorhome season is long: you can roll with the windows down from spring to All Saints' Day, and winters by the sea remain mild.

🟡

In the heart of Catalan Country

Red and gold, sardanes, cargolade, sweet wines from Banyuls: this is French Catalonia. A culture, a cuisine and a light that inspired Matisse, Derain and Dalí, just across the border.

🧭

The gateway to Spain

Just a handful of kilometres from the border, this is the strategic stop for heading down to Costa Brava, Barcelona and beyond — or for unwinding on the way back before rejoining the A9.

When to go

The best season to travel

Thanks to France's sunniest climate, the motorhome season here is exceptionally long. Every period has its own charm — and the aire is open all year round.

🌸SpringApril – June

The finest season: nature in bloom, a warming sea, peaceful villages and gentle prices. Perfect for Côte Vermeille routes and the hinterland.

🏖️SummerJuly – August

Beaches, night markets, Catalan atmosphere at its finest. Very popular: in July–August, arrive before 6 pm to be sure of a pitch.

🍇AutumnSeptember – October

The insiders' secret: a still-warm sea, the grape harvest, golden light and deserted sights. The best calm/price/weather combination of the year.

❄️WinterNovember – March

The Catalan coastline stays mild and luminous. The aire is open 24/7 all year round: the perfect winter base for long-haul travellers and nomadic retirees.

Practical tips for your stay

Access, budget, parking, checklist: the essential tips for exploring Catalan Country by motorhome with no nasty surprises.

🛣️Getting there easily

The aire is just a few minutes from the A9 motorway (Perpignan exit). Detailed directions, GPS coordinates and large-vehicle access details are on the Getting here page.

Getting here →
💶Realistic budget

Factor in A9 tolls, fuel and €9.50/24h at the aire (€13 in July–August) — often the cheapest accommodation of the whole trip. The journey planner estimates your route costs.

📏Parking in town

Town centres (Perpignan, Collioure) are poorly suited to large vehicles. The smart approach: base camp at the aire, then cycle, take the bus or go on short day excursions.

Frequently asked questions

Motorhome travel in the P.-O.: your questions answered

Where to stay by motorhome in the Pyrénées-Orientales?
The Night4CampingCar aire in Sainte-Marie-la-Mer is an ideal base: open 24/7 all year round, 900 m from the beach, with water, electricity, waste disposal, hot showers and Wi-Fi. Park your motorhome here and explore the whole département: Côte Vermeille, Perpignan, beaches and the Spanish border are all within easy reach.
What is the best time to visit the P.-O. by motorhome?
Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) offer the best balance of weather, tranquillity and prices. Summer is magnificent but very busy — arrive before 6 pm. And thanks to the mild coastal climate, winter is a pleasant season too, with the aire open all year round.
Is the aire well located for heading to Spain?
Yes: the border is only about forty kilometres away. Sainte-Marie-la-Mer is the perfect stop to fill up with water, empty the tanks and recharge before heading down to Costa Brava, Figueres or Barcelona — or to unwind on the way back.
Do I need to book?
No. The aire operates on a 24/7 walk-in basis, with pitches allocated on arrival. Outside the July–August peak, there is almost always space available. Not sure? A quick phone call is all it takes to check.
Can I explore the area without moving my motorhome?
Absolutely — it's actually recommended. From the aire, the beach, shops and cycle paths are all reachable on foot or by bike. For Perpignan and the Côte Vermeille, cycling, public transport or short day trips are far preferable to hunting for large-vehicle parking in the town centre.
How much does a night cost?
€9.50 per 24h outside July–August, €13 in July–August, unlimited arrivals and departures, services included. It is generally the most affordable accommodation option for a motorhome stay in the Pyrénées-Orientales.
What facilities are available on site?
Drinking water, grey water and cassette WC disposal, electrical hook-up on every pitch, hot showers and maintained facilities, free Wi-Fi, lit and CCTV-monitored site, motorhome wash station and Dream Dog Wash for your dog.
