Plug in your motorhome without tripping the breaker

Choose the aire's hookup post, tick your appliances, and see live what you can run at the same time. Plus a clear list of the kit to plug in anywhere. 🔌

The simulator

🔌 What can I plug into the hookup?

Set the hookup's amperage, then switch on your appliances. If the gauge turns red, it would trip the breaker: you'll need to switch one off.

1. Choose your hookup post
The amperage is often shown on the aire's hookup post.
2. Tick your appliances
Tap an appliance to switch it on or off.

🧰 The kit to plug in anywhere

With this small kit, you can plug in at almost any aire or campsite hookup post, and even a standard wall socket.

🔌

25 m CEE extension lead

H07RN-F 2,5 mm² cable with blue CEE plugs (P17). 25 m covers almost every hookup post.

Adapter set

CEE ↔ household socket: to plug in anywhere (aire hookup, campsite, garage, standard socket).

🧪

Polarity tester

A mini plug that checks in 2 s that the hookup isn't reversed. A must-have abroad.

Cable reel (unroll it!)

Handy for storage, but ALWAYS unroll it completely: a coiled cable heats up and can melt.

Good practice

✅ Plug in safely

Unroll the whole extension lead

A cable left coiled on its reel heats up and can melt. Unroll it completely, even for just 2 metres.

🧪
Check the polarity

On some hookup posts (and often abroad), live and neutral are reversed. A polarity tester spots it in 2 seconds.

⚖️
Don't run several big appliances at once

Kettle + heating at the same time = a guaranteed trip on a small hookup. Heat one, then the other.

🌧️
Protect the connections from rain

Raise the plugs off the ground, avoid puddles, and only use equipment rated for outdoor use (IP44 minimum).

🔌
Adapt to the amperage

Check the hookup's amperage (often written on it). The lower it is, the fewer things you can run at the same time.

🌙
Switch off and pack up when you leave

Unplug at the hookup post first, then coil up the extension lead neatly while it's dry. Your kit will last for years.

Frequently asked questions

❓ All about the electrical hookup

How many amps does a motorhome aire hookup post deliver?
It ranges from 3 to 16 amps depending on the aire, but 6 or 10 A is the most common. At 6 A you have around 1 380 W, at 10 A around 2 300 W, and at 16 A around 3 680 W. Our simulator shows you what you can run at each amperage.
Which electrical extension lead should I choose for a motorhome?
An extension lead in H07RN-F cable with a 2,5 mm² cross-section, 25 m long, with blue CEE plugs (P17). Unroll it completely in use to avoid overheating.
Why does the breaker trip when I plug in?
Because the total of the appliances switched on exceeds the hookup's power. On a 6 A hookup, a single kettle (2 000 W) is enough to trip the breaker. The solution: only run big appliances one at a time.
Can I use a kettle or a heater on a hookup?
Yes, but rarely at the same time as other big appliances. On a 10 A or 16 A hookup it's fine on its own; on a 6 A hookup, be careful not to run anything else alongside it. The simulator tells you live.
What is reversed polarity?
It's when the live and neutral on the hookup post are wired the wrong way round. It's not dangerous for most appliances, but some equipment (water heater, air conditioner) may not work properly. A polarity tester lets you check it instantly.
Does the Night4CampingCar aire offer electricity?
Yes: an electric package is available on the aire, 900 m from the beach in Sainte-Marie-la-Mer. You can recharge, plug in your appliances and set off again with peace of mind.
